All across the United States, thousands upon thousands of people lie buried in state hospital cemeteries, their graves unmarked, names unknown, and remains unclaimed.
kin • song: ode to disability ancestors is a digital performance ritual—a cybernetic seance—crafted in response to this injustice. Together, we call upon the ghosts of our disability ancestors, waking them from their unmarked graves to join us in an act of mourning, celebration, and care.
Will you join us in our song?

press play to begin
We come to the start of our journey. Our route takes us through the heart of colonial Austin, Texas, beginning at the Austin State Hospital Cemetery and ending at a tree in Central Park: the outer boundary of the Austin State Hospital. As we move, we chart a kinetic map connecting the still-operating institution from its displaced graveyard—an empty field.
Before we embark, we must prepare. Gather: water and weight, surface feel. calming scent, soft light, heated cloth. Lean into what holds you.
Together, we meet our bodies as sacred guides. Join us as we send our attention downward to the far reaches of our bodies, greeting our outermost sensations. We linger, in stillness or motion, for periods longer than reason requires. Gradually, we invite our attention to drift upward, pausing along the way.
Perhaps you recall, as we do:
The cool surface of the granite,
The slow glow of the ofrenda,
The sharp tickle of water poured out,
And the scent: of flowers, of garland, of incense,
Ring of the coin placed on coin, on eye
catch/breath
whisper:
may their memory be a blessing.

“We understand that our embodied experience is a critical guide and reference pointing us towards
justice and liberation.”
Patty Berne, Skin, Tooth, and Bone: The Basis of Movement is our People

Awareness breaks open. Our senses extend outward: long exposure, folded time. Archives spill over and wash the landscape; architecture punctures print. Together, they meet in our soma, a gentle tug pulling us towards our centers, reminding us what we’ve long known.

“Performance allows us to engage in mad devising, refiguring ‘madness’ as a site, as a practice, as a cultural category,
and as an experience.”
Petra Kuppers, “Mad Methodologies and Community Performance: The Asylum Project at Bedlam,”
with Stephanie Heit, April Sizemore-Barber, VK Preston, Andy Hickey, and Andre Wille
Ancestor Cards
We stop for a rest, giving ourselves to the surface below as we breathe: in, out; in, out; in, out. The air is thick, freighted with dead weight.
Light appears in the distance, its warmth caressing your skin. 12 cards lay themselves before you, offering strength on your journey. Each reminds you that you are not the first to move through this path.
Select a card to reveal its message.

“What our bodies… require in order to thrive is what the world requires. If there is a map to get there, it can be found in the atlas of our skin and bone and blood, in the tracks of neurotransmitters and antibodies. We need nourishment, equilibrium, water, connection, justice.”
Aurora Levins Morales, Kindling: Writing on the Body
three || unfurl
Forward, we press on, buoyed by other beings. There is care here.
Feel the damp earth soften and give way to your form, the soft breeze tickle your cheek as it rattles the tall grass, the rising mist of the nearby stream (it thickens your breath), the worn surface of the rock as it presses upwards into your outermost edge, and the trees…
Others join in our motion, from
bedrooms and backyards, the mad the crips the (neuro)queers. Tender bodies arch and ache:
sacred score
we reach our destination. under the sloping branches of an elder tree, we make
hallowed ground.
Tend to your breath, the gentle tumble of your heartbeat, whole-body witness.
Can you sense their presence? Their words fill the air:
Dear one—
You will be told many stories
about who you are
and where you come from
and what you mean
stories of tragedy
stories of pain
stories of futures that disappear before they’ve even begun
but We who have come before
We know different
We are here to remind You
when your mind is all awhirl
Your thoughts moving this way and that
and those around you look on you with contempt
go to the Tree
linger in its shade
notice its curving, curling branches
stretching out to the sky in all directions
never moving in a straight line
We do not say the Tree is broken.
So too, it is with You.
Remember:
You are a Child of the Tree
The wisdom of the Tree moves within You.
when the world around You picks up speed threatening to leave You behind
and those around do not stop or slow
go to the Rock
feel its heavy surface
Its once sharp edges
slowly rounded
changing shape over time.
We do not say the Rock is broken.
So too, it is with You.
Remember:
You are a Child of the Rock
The wisdom of the Rock moves within You.
when others look past you
perceiving only their own understanding
and those around you cannot imagine otherwise
go to the Stream
plunge into its gentle current
its reflective surface guarding
a whole universe
unto its own.
We do not say the Stream is broken.
So too, it is with You.
Remember:
You are a Child of the Stream
The wisdom of the Stream moves within You.
when You are alone
held separate from all others
and those around you cannot seem to comprehend
go to the Tall Grass
brush your skin against its blades
notice its tangled shape
each blade intermingling with the next
always more than one.
We do not say the Tall Grass is broken.
So too, it is with You.
Remember:
You are a Child of the Tall Grass
The wisdom of the Tall Grass moves within You.
when You are overwhelmed
your body and mind porous to your surroundings
and those around you respond with confusion
go to the Earth
press into the cool wet soil
feel it exhale
through twisting roots
and spongy loam.
We do not say the Earth is broken.
So too, it is with You.
Remember:
You are a Child of the Earth.
The wisdom of the Earth moves within You.
And so
When the tree reaches
When the rock rests
When the stream runs
When the grass bends
When the earth moves
Perceive, here,
Your kin:
Those who came before
Those here now
Those who will follow
We are with you.
